How can december be one of the coldest months in the northern hemisphere but has the fewest daylight hours?

There is a time lag in the temperature of the months just as there is one in the day, Noon is not the hottest time of day just as December is not the coolest month. The ground is still cooling down from the hottest month of August and temperatures will not be the coldest (average) until around February.
