Is a 125 dirt bike a good starter?

I'm 14 and 510 and about 145 pounds and I've ridden before but never had my own bike. I work on engines all the time and know how that works. I'm looking to pick up a 1998 kx 125 for $400. I don't want to look like an alligator ******** for not knowing how to ride or shift.
